Depending on your citizenship, a residence and/or work permit may be required to start working in Sweden at Karolinska Institutet. Flytta is a great resource to help with the process of moving to Sweden for work. You must register moving to Sweden with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).
Residence permit
EU/EEA citizens
As an EU/EEA citizen, you have the right to work, study or live in Sweden without a residence permit.
Nordic citizens
Nordic citizens (from Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden) have the right to live and work in any Nordic country without the requirement of a residence permit.
Swiss citizens
Swiss citizens intending to stay for more than three months will need to apply for a residence permit. However, you may begin working or studying as soon as you arrive in Sweden while you wait for your application to be processed.
Non-EU/EEA citizens
Non-EU/EEA citizens must apply for a residence permit before coming to Sweden. You are recommended to do this as early as possible as waiting times can be lengthy. As of 1 January 2022 (due to Brexit), British citizens who want to live and work in Sweden have to apply for a permit.
If you already have a valid European permanent residence permit from another EU member country, you still would need to apply for a work permit. This permit application must be approved before you come to Sweden.

Moving with family
If your family members are EU citizens they have their own right of residence. If your family members are non-EU citizens, they are required to have their own residence permit.
