Learning Swedish

While the majority of Swedes speak English fluently, learning Swedish can make it easier to settle into life in Sweden, particularly if you plan to stay long-term.
Learn more about the various Swedish language courses on the KI website.

Folkuniversitetet

As a postdoc at KI, you are entitled to one beginner's Swedish language course at Folkuniversitetet free of charge. To enrol in a course, you must register with Folkuniversitetet beforehand. Folkuniversitetet organizes courses in blocks, which ensures that everyone starts at the same time and proficiency level.

Swedish for immigrants (SFI)

SFI courses are offered free of charge and provide knowledge of the Swedish language and society. Municipalities are required to provide SFI courses to newly arrived adult immigrants with a personal number, and EU/non-EU citizens with the right to reside in Sweden can also attend. To see if you are eligible, check with your municipality, such as Stockholm, Solna, Sollentuna or Huddinge.

Unlike Folkuniversitetet, SFI courses run continuously, resulting in varying levels of proficiency within the classes. Many SFI courses offer weekly evening classes designed for working professionals.

Moving with family

If your family members are registered and have a Swedish ID card they can take Swedish language classes with SFI.
